People living in Amsterdam have started tilting towards organic food as more awareness is being created about eating healthy and chemical-free food. This has given rise to several organic markets appearing in the capital city of the Netherlands. You can visit these markets to taste local delicacies as well as hunt for culinary gifts for friends and family back home.
These markets offer a completely different shopping experience. The stall owners will be ready to help you out with your purchase and also want to hold a friendly conversation with you. You can sample many items before you make a decision. Amsterdam has three organic markets spread around the city. They are situated outside, so it is advisable to wear warm clothes or carry a sweater or cardigan when you intend visiting them.
Noordermarkt Organic Farmers' Market is located in Jordaan District. It is the oldest of the three markets and started operating in 1987. The market is open every Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm. You can buy local breads, cheeses, meats, vegetables, herbs, cakes and fresh juices here. Even non-food items like natural clothing and jewelry are sold in one section of the market. Out of three markets, this is the most expensive one.
Nieuwmarkt Organic Farmers' Market is located in the Old Center. Here too you can get a good collection of farm fresh vegetables and fruits. You can also buy a variety of grains, pulses and teas. You can get a great selection of jams, juices, salad dressings and sauces. One of the stalls specializes in selling organic raspberries from South Holland. The raspberries are packed very uniquely making them ideal gifts for family and friends. As the market is smaller than Noordermarkt, it is not that busy or expensive. Nieuwmarkt is also open every Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.
Culinary Farmers' Market is located on Haarlemmerplein in the city center. This market is open every Wednesday. It is small with just 10 stalls but you can get a wide variety of Dutch culinary treats, including smoked eel, wild turkey and game meat besides fruits, vegetables, cheeses and olives. The market is open from 10 am to 6 pm.
